Future Residents Had Chance to Meet, Mingle with Future Neighbors

SAN DIEGO, CA - Jan. 17, 2018 – The Glen at Scripps Ranch, the first continuing care retirement community to be built in San Diego in nearly 10 years, held formal groundbreaking ceremonies recently with future residents, city officials and other well-wishers in attendance. The new Glen at Scripps Ranch community is located at 10718 Pomerado Rd. near Interstate 15 providing convenient access to all the best of San Diego, including the airport, beaches and harbor, and major shopping, recreation and cultural centers.

The groundbreaking featured a patriotic theme in honor of the numerous future residents who served in the Armed Forces. Karen Zajac, a future resident of The Glen, set the tone for the program with her a capella singing performance of "America the Beautiful." Turning the first shovels of dirt were Allen and Lee Rachel, the first to reserve homes at The Glen. The Rachels were joined by Mark Kersey, San Diego City Council President Pro Tem, Bob Ilko, President of the Scripps Ranch Civic Association, Wally Wulfeck, Chair of the Scripps Ranch Planning Group, and representatives from The Glen. Guests enjoyed a catered luncheon and music by the Scripps Ranch Rock & Blues Band.

According to Rick Aschenbrenner, Marketing Director for The Glen at Scripps Ranch, the groundbreaking festivities were held so future residents could meet their new neighbors. In planning and approval stages since 2010, The Glen will offer independent living apartment-style homes and villas (single-family homes with attached garages). The community will also feature a complete package of services, activities, amenities and food service, as well as convenient access to the adjacent health center for assisted living, memory care and long-term care in a skilled nursing center, if ever needed.

"The groundbreaking celebrated the next step toward making The Glen a reality for San Diego seniors – many of whom have been waiting years for this community," Aschenbrenner said. "More than 400 future residents were at the event and many more were unable to attend.

"Retirement communities provide a great place to live, but people today want much more. A mix of the right amenities and services, including nursing, is essential. Equally important is the opportunity for older adults to live in a community that fulfills social needs such as friendship, belonging and engagement. The groundbreaking celebration was an opportunity for future residents to meet and know they are on a shared, life-enriching path with others just like them."

Allen Rachel, a long-term resident of Tierrasanta, and his wife, Lee, were among the first to commit to The Glen and are looking forward to move-in day.

"We selected this community for a number of reasons, including its location and the opportunity to live in a brand new home," Rachel said. "But what we're really excited about is the chance to connect with other people living at The Glen."

Marty McCord, a single woman with a home in the San Carlos area of San Diego, is attracted to the community's "worry-free" lifestyle.

"I was the caregiver for my mother for seven years and now it's my time," McCord said. "I plan to enjoy all the activities, fitness classes, excursions and just socializing with other residents. On top of it, I don't like to cook so having lots of dining options appeals to me."

Building construction of the community's independent living homes, clubhouse and recreational areas is expected to begin in a few weeks, with a grand opening set for late 2019.

The Glen at Scripps Ranch is being built on a 53-acre site next to the Alliant International University campus. Designed by KTGY Architects based in Irvine, California, The Glen at Scripps Ranch will feature an architectural style compatible with its Scripps Ranch neighborhood. On-site amenities include a clubhouse with a variety of dining options ranging from sit-down dining to a "Grab and Go" deli counter. Other amenities include a library and game rooms, indoor swimming pool, sauna and Jacuzzi, fitness center and spa, auditorium for live performances and presentations, movie theatre, tech and business center, arts and craft studio, short-game golf course, dog parks, and tennis and pickleball courts.

Continuing Life®, based in Carlsbad, California, will provide business and advisory services for The Glen at Scripps Ranch. For additional information about the new community, please call (866) 955-0654 or visit http://www.theglenatscrippsranch.com/.
